Conference background
In 1613 the map „MAGNI DUCATUS LITHUANIAE CAETERARUMQUE REGIONUM ILLI ADIACENTIUM EXACTA DESCRIPTIO" – „Exact descripton of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and it‘s neighbour territories" was published in Amsterdam by the effort of Mikalojus Kristupas Radvila (Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł, 1549-1616). The map will be 400 years old in 2013. It still surprises cartography experts with oustanding graphic rendering and the amount of geographic and historical data included. But cartography has also changed over the four centuries. In the 21st century this discipline has become very close to society – mainly due to modern geographic information technologies maps can be used everywhere, anytime and by anyone. Such changes lead to problems related to geographic information law, ethics and dissemination. Cartography is seen as an integral part of emerging Geographic Information Science. The focus of the conference will be on the importance and sustainability of of cartographic approach and on the future development of cartography in the Republic of Lithuania.Prominent scientists of Lithuania and Europe, representatives of geographic information organisations and business will make presentations at the conference. The two-days event includes a social program and ample time for discussions.
